As a provider of educational opportunities for students, The Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program does not offer services for professional productions, filmmakers or composers. Student musicians who perform on the scores do so for the educational experience of working in a recording studio environment.

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE IN FILM SCORING

Applications for the Professional Certificate in Film Scoring are now being accepted. Classes begin Tuesday, September 7, 2010.

Introduction

The Pacific NW Film Scoring Program is proud to announce the launch of our new, full-time Professional Certificate in Film Scoring. Classes begin Tuesday, September 7, 2010 in Seattle, WA. This program is a thorough immersion into writing music for Film, TV, and other media that will prepare students to enter those fields with the skill set, experience, and professional portfolio necessary to launch a successful career.

Students will write for professional session musicians, work on state-of-the-art workstations assigned to them for the duration of the Program, and receive extensive guidance individually and in small classes from outstanding instructors who are professionally active.

Over the past 12 years we have honed our curriculum through our evening extension and two-week Summer Intensive programs and have designed this Professional Certificate with a keen understanding of what training is necessary to fully prepare our graduates to enter the field of composing for media. This new Professional Certificate offers students more contact hours with instructors than any other program of its type. The program features over 450 hours of class instruction with student-to-teacher ratios as low as 5:1 and 1:1. Also included are over 400 hours of supervised MIDI-lab time with an instructor available to answer questions and give assistance one-on-one as needed.

Throughout the program, students will be guided every step of the way as they learn the art, craft, techniques and technology of writing music for film and media. Our goal is to produce the most prepared graduates of any film-scoring program currently offered. The Professional Certificate is a 40-week program, running from September 7–July 1.

In addition to many assignments realized using MIDI stations, students of the program will also compose the music for six portfolio-caliber scoring projects. These projects will be written and produced to professional standards and will cover a wide variety of styles and scoring techniques. Students will write for ensembles of various sizes, up to and including a full orchestra. Selected projects will combine electronic elements with live performance, working in a professional studio-recording environment. Additionally, the lab will be open outside of class time seven days a week and will be supervised Monday-Friday by our faculty.

Program Location

The Pacific NW Film Scoring Program is based in Seattle, WA. Beautiful Seattle has been voted the most livable city, the most secure city, food city of the year, most literate city, most dog-friendly city, most caffeinated (!) city and more many times over in a wide variety of publications.

Seattle is a city of fun, interesting boroughs that vary in style from residential and family-oriented to young, hip and urban. The city boasts a vibrant waterfront and a system of ferries that can whisk you out to the beautiful islands of Puget Sound. Travel the other direction to Mount Rainier and other mountains for gorgeous hiking and camping opportunities. In the winter excellent skiing is less than two hours away!!

The Film Scoring Program is based in one of the fun urban parts of Seattle and is walking distance from restaurants, clubs, stores, apartment buildings and public transportation.

While based on our pre-existing curriculum, this new program is far more extensive and comprehensive in scope. Each week students will spend 18 hours in class, 12 hours in the MIDI lab with faculty guidance, and up to 15 more hours in the lab unsupervised. Over the 40 weeks students will compose music for dozens of assignments, will write for top-caliber live musicians and will use state-of-the-art technology.
